Moxibustion

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion or Moxa is the burning of Chinese herb called mugwort. The moxa can come in many forms, including cigar-like moxa rolls, rice grain sized type and compressed smokeless sticks and cones.
In Chinese Medicine, Mugwort is considered to be warm, acrid and bitter when used in herbal prescription. When burnt, Mugwort’s warming nature is helpful for expelling cold and damp from the body as well as warming the body’s channels. The bitter and acrid aspect of Mugwort helps to break stagnation, clear phlegm and regulate the Qi and blood.

Moxa can be considered to be a parallel therapy to acupuncture, being used to stimulate Qi flow on points of the body that are selected for their specific function.

There is no need to be concerned about the burning factor of moxibustion therapy as it’s very safe when performed by a qualified and skilled Chinese Medicine Practitioner.

How is Moxibustion performed?

The raw moxa can be burnt as a rice grain size directly on acupuncture points in order to stimulate those points. It can be directed over the point as a moxa roll in order to indirectly warm the point and meridian. It can also be rubbed along the meridian in a lion or tiger warmer or placed on the end of an inserted acupuncture needle to strengthen the stimulation of the acupuncture point.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not able to list any conditions that moxa may treat. Due to AHPRA regulations and legal changes to registration guidelines in 2017.
